Program Overview


Built on a strong foundation of the psychological theories of learning, the Master of Arts in Educational Technology (MAET) program develops innovative, educational leaders who seek to transform teaching and learning. Graduates will be able to utilize technologies to support teaching and learning in a range of educational environments, and also develop deep understandings of how, when, and why to integrate technology to support learning processes. The MAET program offers flexible pathways (with online, summer hybrid, and summer overseas options) and award-winning courses that have been recognized by MSU's AT&T Awards for best practices in the use of technology to enhance teaching and learning.

We teach students how to think deeply about technology and to put that thought into practice. Students will discover how to think critically about learning, and establish practices to integrate current and future technologies into their profession.

Career Outlook


Our students are primarily teachers, administrators, and other educational professionals at all stages of their professional careers. The MAET degree prepares students to be thought leaders in their professional contexts. Graduates of the MAET degree become confident, capable users of a wide range of technologies in educational settings and also develop deep theoretical understandings of how, when and why to integrate technologies to support learning processes.

Dr. Liz Owens Boltz

Director of MAED and MAET Programs

Dr. Owens Boltz is dedicated to supporting students and the diverse goals, needs, and backgrounds they bring to MAED and MAET. She is a graduate of Michigan State University’s Educational Psychology & Educational Technology program, where she studied video games for learning. She has been an instructor for the Master of Arts in Educational Technology program since 2013, and has taught in the online, hybrid, and overseas formats. She writes and plays music, and also enjoys drawing and playing video games.

Admissions Requirements

To be accepted to this program, you must have:

  • Undergraduate degree from an accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • CV/Résumé
  • Taken the TOEFL
    Only required if English is not your first language. A waiver can be requested through the Graduate School.
  • A written personal statement detailing your professional interests and goals.
  • 2 letters of recommendation from previous or current colleagues, mentors, or supervisors. Provide contact information for your recommenders and the MSU application system will provide instructions to them.
  • Official transcripts from all previous schools

To apply to this program:

  • Complete a university application and pay the application fee.
  • Submit all required materials to the application portal.
