Program Overview


Advances in science and technology are resulting in globalization or the interconnectedness and interdependence of peoples worldwide. As a result, populations have experienced significant changes in patterns of infectious and chronic disease, as well as an increase in antimicrobial resistance. The emerging field of global health is dedicated to improving health and achieving equity in health for all people, worldwide, and encompasses an approach and unique toolset to work collaboratively across cultures and disciplines.


The Graduate Certificate in Global Health is a flexible, online graduate certificate program designed to introduce students to the concepts and skills needed to address global health challenges. Students complete nine credits in courses focusing on global health practice, global burden of disease, One Health, and evidence-based practice. Credits are transferable to the Master of Science in Global Health.


Program Outcomes


Students will achieve competencies recommended by the Consortium of Universities for Global Health related to professional practice in global health.

Dr. Rebecca Malouin

Director of Global Health Studies program and Canadian Studies Center

Dr. Malouin completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan and then served as a United States Peace Corps volunteer in Niger. Following her service, she received her Ph.D. and M.P.H. in international health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She also completed a M.S. in epidemiology from Michigan State University through funding from the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Malouin oversees all aspects of the Global Health Studies Program. She also developed and leads OST 822 Introduction to Global Health Practice and co-directs CHM/OST 847 Public Health in Ghana: A One Health Perspective.

Admissions Requirements

To be accepted to this program, you must have:

  • A bachelor's degree, professional degree, or equivalent degree from an accredited college or university.
  • 3.0 GPA or above on a 4.0 scale
  • Previous work experience
  • CV/Résumé
  • 2 letters of recommendation. Provide contact information for your recommenders and the MSU application system will provide instructions to them.
  • Official transcripts from all previous schools
  • A personal statement - Please address the following questions:
    • Why are you interested in global health?
    • What are your career goals following the Graduate Certificate in Global Health? How will a degree in global health help you meet those goals?
    • What additional information would you like to share in consideration for admission?
