Program Overview

The Department of Religious Studies offers a fully online, asynchronous Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership, Global Cultures, and Social Enterprise designed to introduce students to the concepts and skills needed to thrive in the nonprofit sector. Students complete 10 credits with one required 2-credit course in Religion, Cultural Knowledge, and Nonprofits. All credits are transferable to the Master of Arts in Nonprofit Leadership, Global Cultures, and Social Enterprise.

Program Outcomes

The Nonprofit Leadership, Global Cultures, and Social Enterprise Graduate Certificate provides a strong foundation for existing and future nonprofit leaders to reach their potential. With a flexible design, students will be able to tailor the program to achieve the competencies necessary to advance their nonprofit career.

Nonprofit organizations are a sizable economic force employing 12.3 million people, with payrolls exceeding those of most other U.S. industries, including construction, transportation, and finance. Dr. Jennifer Marcy has worked with a wide range of nonprofit organizations in the United States and around the world. She has extensive grant writing experience including program design, proposal writing, and budget development and has worked on solicitations from various donors including government agencies and foundations. Dr. Marcy has also managed multimillion dollar international research and capacity development programs in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. She is passionate about educating the next generation of nonprofit leaders and enjoys mentoring students to help further their professional goals.

Admissions Requirements

To be accepted to this program, you must have:

  • Have an undergraduate degree from or be a current advanced undergraduate student at a recognized institution
  • Have demonstrated familiarity with and work experience in the non-profit sector (Résumé/CV)
  • Have an ACM minimum TOEFL score of 90 on the non-native language proficiency test if the student is an international applicant
  • A written personal statement detailing your professional interests and goals
  • A written academic statement
  • 3 letters of recommendation
  • Official transcripts from all previous schools

To apply to this program:

  • Complete a university graduate application and pay the application fee.
  • Submit required materials to the application portal.
  • Send all official transcripts to Michigan State University.
